Dato’ G Kumaar Aamaann, Chief Editor of Ottrangknews and an activist, has strongly urged YB Hannah Yeoh, the Minister of Youth and Sports of Malaysia, to immediately address the welfare of the nation’s athletes who have sacrificed so much for the country, especially when they face health issues.
He expressed his disappointment over the huge amounts of funds being allocated for the upgrading of sports stadiums, while the welfare of athletes who have fought to bring glory to Malaysia on the international stage is neglected. “Athletes’ welfare, which only requires a few ringgit for health insurance, should be given more serious attention. They have given everything for the country, now it’s time for us to give back to them,” said Dato’ G.
This issue has gained further attention after national athlete Muhamad Habibullah Mohd Saleh (Gabit), who is battling cancer for the second time. Gabit, who was free from cancer in 2023, is now facing the same challenge again in 2024. In response to this, the founder of the Empowerment of Education and Skills Foundation, Datuk Noorul Ariffin Abdul Majeed, called for sports organizations such as the Malaysian Motorcycling Association (MAM) to take a more proactive role in providing support to former athletes in need, particularly in terms of health and welfare.
Noorul Ariffin also announced that he would assist Gabit with moral support and counseling, through a special team made up of former cancer patients. “This is important to provide encouragement and motivation to those who are fighting this difficult illness,” he said.
As a next step, Dato’ G Kumaar Aamaann suggested that the government collaborate with insurance companies to provide free health insurance to all athletes in the country, to ensure they receive lifelong protection. “Let’s not just focus on the development of sports stadiums and arenas that require large expenditures, but neglect the welfare of those who have sacrificed for the country. This is the time to give back to our national heroes,” stressed Dato’ G.
