African Swine Fever Outbreak in Selangor: Update on Culling and Disinfection Measures
Number of Pigs Culled Corrected
The Selangor veterinary services department (DVS) has issued a correction regarding the number of pigs culled in the state on suspicion of being infected with African Swine Fever (ASF). According to State DVS director Dr Hassuzana Khalil, only 14,000 pigs of various categories were culled, not 76,000 as claimed by infrastructure and agriculture exco Izham Hashim.
Culling and Disinfection Measures
The animals that were culled were done so using carbon dioxide gas, and their carcasses were buried on pig farms, in line with set guidelines. A total of 58 farms in Sepang and Kuala Langat have seen outbreaks of ASF so far, and they have been ordered to cull the animals to curb the disease from spreading.
Probe Papers Opened
The department has opened seven probe papers following an operation held in areas with the ASF outbreak. Dr Hassuzana said that pig farms in Selangor are deemed high risk due to inadequate biosecurity measures and their close proximity to one another, making it easier for the disease to spread.
No Vaccine Available, Disinfection Measures in Place
"It is expected that ASF infections will continue since there is currently no available vaccine for the disease," Dr Hassuzana said, adding that all farms have been ordered to undergo disinfection to mitigate the spread. "Farmers are also prohibited from introducing new pigs until the infection is fully eradicated and Selangor is declared ASF-free," she said.
