PETALING JAYA: Picture the perfect weekend – book in hand, friends old and new by your side, laughter in the air. Eat Books Club, an initiative started by Ella Pang over two years ago, will make you fall in love with reading all over again.
This cozy community has hosted many meets inspired by the theme of each month’s book. In their group chat, members suggest their choices for the title of the month, and then vote on the final selection.
In the meantime, Pang decides on the perfect place for the upcoming meet. Though most of them are organised in homey cafés, she likes to occasionally switch things up.
Just last month, when tackling Ruth Ozeki’s “A Tale for the Time Being”, which explores mental health and identity, the members “stretched both their body and minds” in a relaxing guided yoga session.
From hiking sessions at Bukit Kiara to swim meets stacked with all kinds of snacks, there’s a little something for everyone in Eat Books Club.

Speaking with FMT Lifestyle, Pang, 26, shared her favourite memory thus far.
“For our two-year anniversary, we did a book swap and discussion. I booked an Airbnb and invited the members to come and celebrate. I had a friend DJ for us as well.
“The theme of the discussion was ‘if we were villains’. So there were outfits, with people dressing up in the style of dark academia.”
Pang said she had formed the club out of a desire to find like-minded bibliophiles, especially in this digital age that sees dwindling numbers of readers of physical books.
Having evolved from small get-togethers among acquaintances to collaborating on reading fests with major bookstores, the founder stressed that the core of Eat Books Club remains the same.

”Ultimately, it’s about making discussions accessible for people that want to talk about books,” she said. “I try to keep it very simple: how can I bring members of the community closer together?”
She noted that with limited slots available, spots for each monthly meet tend to fill up within the hour. Still, everyone is welcome to join, as Pang wishes for this to be a safe space for readers of all kinds.
“When I receive feedback about Eat Books Club being a safe space, it feels wholesome, knowing that I can bring people together,” she concluded.
