An experienced senior nurse with over 29 years of service at Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) has shared the challenges she faces while performing her duties. This nurse, who has worked in various units, including specialized units and COVID-19 wards, revealed that she is now dealing with severe health issues such as osteoarthritis and degenerative spinal disease, worsened by the physical strain of her job.
She underwent surgery on her right knee last August and is planning surgery on her left knee in March next year. However, after returning to work from medical leave, she was instructed to take charge of a ward and perform physically demanding tasks, such as pushing patient beds to the dialysis unit.
‘No Choice’ Instructions and Mental Stress
The nurse expressed the stress she felt when given these instructions without consideration for her health condition. Attempts to discuss the matter with her superiors were unsuccessful, as they cited directives from top management.
Her mental stress escalated when she was labeled “lazy” for frequently taking sick leave as advised by her doctor. As a result, she was referred to the hospital’s psychiatric clinic by a doctor to receive mental health support.
The Need for Policy Reassessment and Support for Healthcare Workers
This case highlights the welfare issues faced by healthcare workers in public institutions. Hospital administration should consider measures such as offering early retirement options for healthcare staff who can no longer perform physically demanding tasks.
Fairer task distribution and assigning staff based on their health conditions should be a priority to prevent similar incidents in the future.
