KUALA LUMPUR: Six mornings a week, Muhammad Farid Muhammad Mustafa unloads an espresso machine, coffee grinder, generator, ice box and other essentials from his car to set up his coffee stall.

Named ‘Silent Brew’, this is where you can enjoy a strong, satisfying cup of coffee.

There are a variety of hot and iced beverages here, from classics like long black, latte, and cappuccino to more adventurous flavours like santan latte with gula Melaka, cinnamon latte and more.

Although Farid, 38, is hearing-impaired, his brew speaks volumes – it’s smooth and rich, with just enough kick to get you going.

“Many people have asked me about the name ‘Silent Brew’. Perhaps some people have thought the name means total silence. But I’m not mute, I’m only hearing impaired,” Farid told FMT Lifestyle.

When Farid was 10 years old, the motorcycle he was on with his father hit a pothole, causing them both to fall. Soon after, Farid’s nose and ears began to bleed.

Then came his gradual loss of hearing. At 12, he was diagnosed with profound hearing loss in both ears caused by injuries to the cochleae and nerves.

In 2020, he underwent a cochlear implant procedure in his left ear. Although his hearing has improved, it still takes him some time to adjust to unfamiliar voices.

“It can be slightly challenging when meeting new customers. But I can improve and learn the way they speak,” he said, adding that he can also lip-read.

Occasionally, he revealed, customers unaware of his hearing impairment get annoyed. Loud noises also cause his left eye to twitch, which affects his concentration.

The weather is yet another challenge as rainy days hurt his sales.

But Farid takes it all in stride. “I just push through because I want to earn a living for my family,” he said.

Farid and his wife, Rashidah Mohd Yusoff, have a 10-year-old son, Muhammad Al Fateh. The couple previously ran a café, but keeping the business afloat during the pandemic was a challenge.

When Rashidah, who ran the kitchen, suffered a slipped disc last year, they had to close the café for four months. The closure took a toll on their business, and so the couple decided to close shop for good.

Knowing full well how much her husband loved coffee, she encouraged him to open a coffee stall instead. “I started ‘Silent Brew’ on April 7, after Hari Raya Aidilfitri,” said Farid.

A touching remark from their son, Farid shared, keeps him going. “He said, ‘One day, ibu and abi will have a big shop again.

“He also said, ‘With this coffee stall, I think you can go even further. Your coffee is really good’. He’s also a coffee lover,” added Rashidah, 48.

Farid also gets a boost in confidence when customers praise his coffee, or become regulars at his stall.

One such customer is Zahrin Ibrahim, 47. “The coffee is strong. I’ve tried many places around Taman Melawati, but this one suits my taste better,” she said.

Farid has also experienced unexpected acts of kindness.

“Once, a customer bought four cups which came to RM36. He paid via QR code, and I didn’t realise he had overpaid until that night.

“I initially thought that he might have entered the wrong amount. I tried to find him through social media and eventually learnt that he had intentionally paid extra.”

These things encourage Farid to keep brewing. “I believe ‘Silent Brew’ can go far if it’s located in the right place. I truly hope to open a shop in an area with lots of coffee lovers,” he said.

This, he added, would also spare him the routine of loading and unloading his equipment, a task that sometimes causes him back pain.

“Those who are hearing-impaired may look like everyone else, but others should make an effort to understand them better. Simply put, don’t judge others before you know their story.

“I hope society will be more understanding towards these special individuals and give them opportunities based on their potential,” Farid concluded.
