News: KUALA LUMPUR, April 13, 2025 — The communications ministry will be actively monitoring social media activities during the Ayer Kuning by-election campaign period to curb the spread of fake news, defamatory remarks, and sensitive 3R (religion, race, royalty) content.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil urged all parties to conduct their campaigns responsibly and refrain from raising sensitive issues. “I advise everyone to avoid slander and the use of 3R elements, especially on social media. We have the tools to trace the origins of messages and comments,” he said.
He reminded the public that with the recent amendment to the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which came into force on February 11, violators of Section 233 can face fines of up to RM500,000. “This is a hefty fine, and I hope it serves as a reminder to everyone to avoid spreading slander, both during the campaign and at all times,” Fahmi said at an Aidilfitri open house in Lembah Pantai last night.
Section 233 pertains to the misuse of network facilities, including the sharing of offensive content.
The Ayer Kuning by-election, set for April 26, follows the passing of the incumbent, Ishsam Shahruddin, who died of a heart attack on February 22.
The by-election will see a three-way contest between Barisan Nasional’s Yusri Bakir, Perikatan Nasional’s Abd Muhaimin Malek, and KS Bawani from Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM).
Commenting on BN’s candidate, Fahmi, who is also the MP for Lembah Pantai, said Yusri Bakir is well-qualified and has a promising chance of winning. “I met him recently during a short visit to Ayer Kuning. He is experienced and educated. I believe he has strong potential, but he must work hard,” Fahmi added.
