KUALA LUMPUR: Ever craved ice cream late at night but fought the urge because you’re trying to be “good”? Or had friends side-eye you for indulging in a scoop, just because you once mentioned you’re watching your weight?

Well, it’s time to toss the guilt and grab a spoon – because XO-Ice by Indulge Creamery is here to let you satisfy your cravings, without compromise.

Co-created by former investment banker Jennifer Lee and F&B veteran Donatien Monod, XO-Ice aims to be a game-changer. It’s low in calories and sugar, high in protein, and comes in dairy-free options. That means sweet-tooths everywhere can dig in, no shame needed.

“I just want people to be able to indulge as freely as they want. Whether you want to eat half a pint or a whole tub, you don’t have to feel bad about it,” said Lee.

XO-Ice flavours are made with the Malaysian palate in mind – think matcha, musang king, mango, chocolate, Vietnamese coffee, bubble tea, roasted black sesame and more. There are also two plant-based options: strawberry and mango.

“With our gelato, you can eat it and feel good about yourself, knowing you’ve chosen something that’s good for you,” said Lee, who knows what it’s like to overindulge.

“I started eating more and more ice cream during my university days in Beijing because I had no parental control!” Lee, a Taiwanese raised in Mauritius, laughed.

“One day, I ate so much that I had to be rushed to the hospital. Also, I gained a bit of weight because of this and my family members were commenting on it,” she added.

From that moment, Lee lost her “freedom to snack” and started searching for healthy treats that still hit the spot.

Years later, she was introduced to Monod, saw a gap in the Asian market for healthy yet tasty ice cream, and decided to take the plunge. With help from Dr Salvatore Cannavò, a legendary Italian gelato expert, XO-Ice was born.

“He has over 60 years of experience,” she said of Cannavò.

“We shared with him our idea for a great tasting gelato but with a complete nutritional profile. He sat there quietly, composed. When we were done, he asked, ‘So, you want to change everything about the product, without changing the product?’,” Lee recounted.

After months of testing and tweaking, they launched XO-Ice in Malaysia and Singapore. It was during the pandemic. What makes their gelato different?

Every tub has fewer than 350 calories, under 5% sugar, and up to 28g of protein. “We’re relentless about making it delicious,” said Lee, adding that avoiding that chalky, protein-powder taste was a top priority.

Take their plant-based options, for instance. “La Vie En Pink”, a strawberry gelato made with organic European berries, tastes like summer in a spoon.

“Mango Goes Coco” meanwhile blends Alphonso mangoes with a salted coconut swirl – think mango sticky rice in gelato form. Both have a smooth, sorbet-like texture.

As for XO-Ice’s main offering, one of the standout flavours is “Bubblely Hills”, a bubble tea-inspired gelato nodding to Lee’s Taiwanese roots, with fragrant black tea and chewy tapioca pearls for that true boba experience.

Coffee lovers, try “Goood Morning Vietnaaam”. Made with 100% robusta beans from Vietnam, the flavours are rich and bold, minus the usual sugar hit.

Chocolate fans should get “Seriously Chocolate” or “Gingerly Chocolate” – the latter spiced with semi-candied ginger for a fiery twist that’s surprisingly addictive.

So whether you need a post-gym reward or a midnight treat, XO-Ice lets you enjoy your gelato with none of the guilt. “I want everyone to have that freedom to indulge again, like we did when we were kids,” Lee concluded.
