Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin’s statement that Bersatu and UMNO should sit together due to their shared political struggle has opened a new chapter in Malaysia’s political landscape. From a broader strategic perspective, a larger coalition within Perikatan Nasional (PN) could take shape ahead of the next general election.
Parties such as UMNO, Bersatu, PAS, MIC, MCA, Gerakan, and several others may unite under one banner to challenge Pakatan Harapan (PH). If this happens, it could be a highly effective political strategy for key leaders such as Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, and Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to solidify their positions.
If this grand coalition materializes, PH is likely to lose power. Prominent figures like Khairy Jamaluddin and Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein will also have to decide whether to return to UMNO or join Bersatu to strengthen the opposition bloc. Based on recent developments, Khairy Jamaluddin appears more inclined to join Bersatu, as it offers him a pathway back into mainstream politics without submitting to the UMNO leadership he previously criticized. Meanwhile, Hishammuddin Hussein is more likely to either return to UMNO or align with PAS, depending on PN’s strategy to consolidate Malay-Islamic support.
As a political activist and Chief Editor of Ottrangknews, I, Dato’ G Kumaar Aamaan, see this as a strong possibility following Datuk Seri Hamzah’s statement. If this political alliance is realized, Malaysia’s political landscape will witness a major transformation, shaping the outcome of the next general election.
