PETALING JAYA: The Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, says he will not be joining the Football Association of Malaysia, but the association will “join me”.

In a statement on Instagram today in response to a netizen’s inquiry about his potential return to the football governing body, Tunku Ismail said: “I will not be joining FAM, FAM will join me.”

Tunku Ismail previously served as FAM president in 2017 but stepped down a year later following criticism of Malaysia’s drop in the Fifa rankings.

The 40-year-old owner of Johor Darul Ta’zim recently met with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh and FAM president Hamidin Amin.

Among the topics discussed at the meeting was the planning and development of the national football team.
