Indonesia Expresses Interest in Joining BRICS

New Member Application Process Begins

Indonesia has expressed its interest in joining the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) bloc, and the application process for membership has commenced, according to the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

National Statement at BRICS Plus Summit

Foreign Minister Sugiono conveyed Indonesia’s desire to join BRICS during the country’s national statement at the BRICS Plus Summit in Kazan, Russia. Speaking on the matter, spokesperson Rolliansyah Soemirat said, "Indonesia wishes to cooperate with BRICS countries and other nations in the Global South on sustainable development and reforms in the multilateral system to make it more inclusive and representative of today’s realities."

Vision for Unity and Solidarity

Soemirat added, "It is hoped that Indonesia and the countries within BRICS can become a force for unity and solidarity among Global South nations." The decision on Indonesia’s application will be based on established mechanisms within the group, as formalised in an official letter from the foreign minister delivered directly to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Alignment with BRICS Priorities and Indonesian Government’s Work Programme

Indonesia’s desire to join BRICS reflects its commitment to an independent and active foreign policy, avoiding alignment with any particular bloc while continuing to participate in all forums, Soemirat explained. This objective aligns with the priorities of BRICS countries and the Indonesian government’s work programme on food security, energy resilience, poverty eradication, and human resource development.

Economic Benefits Evaluation

Since attending the 15th BRICS Summit in South Africa in August 2023, Indonesia has been evaluating its potential membership, particularly the economic benefits of joining the bloc. The intergovernmental organisation has recently expanded to include the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Egypt, and Ethiopia, bringing its membership to nine.
