Hotzilla: A Whimsical Classroom-Themed Hotplate Restaurant
The Concept
Hotzilla, a new classroom-themed hotplate restaurant in SS15 Subang, is the brainchild of Ashley Chan and Daniesya Shafyna, both 26, and friends for over ten years. The duo met in school and wanted to create a restaurant that would bring back nostalgic memories of their school days.
The Theme
The restaurant’s interior is designed to look like a typical classroom setting, complete with tables resembling classroom desks and menus and order forms resembling exercise books and exam sheets. The youthful staff are dressed in school uniforms (complete with badges and name tags) and can be summoned by ringing a bell.
The Food
The names of the dishes seem inspired by the song "Old McDonald had a Farm": the Quack Quack features smoked duck from Perak, while the Mek Mek features tender mutton. One of the most popular choices, the Moo Moo, is a tantalising combination of Australian beef slices and nasi minyak. The restaurant’s standout feature is its sauces made from scratch, with options like salted egg buttermilk, dry sambal, Tiga Rasa, and curry rendang.
The Experience
Venturing into Hotzilla may give you flashbacks to your youthful days. The restaurant’s whimsical menu and colourful theme puts it in a class of its own. The two founders say that running the eatery has been quite an experience so far, and they are still learning to adapt to customer preferences. For example, increasing demands for quick service by afternoon customers led them to create a speedy "Back to Kantin Sekolah" lunch set.
Conclusion
Overall, if you’re looking for a fun place to enjoy a meal with friends, Hotzilla definitely makes the grade. Its whimsical menu and colourful theme puts it in a class of its own. The pair hope to create a special place for laughter, where customers can come not just on special occasions, but on a regular basis. Malaysia has a lot of amazing flavours and they hope those who visit them, can try them all out.
