KUALA LUMPUR: Patrick Chin has always been smitten by the idea of running his own café someday.

“When I was working, I would often stop by the Dave’s Deli at Wisma Atria in Petaling Jaya. I think there’s where I found my love for it.

“And I thought, one day, I would have a café under my name. Something to look forward to, you know?” the Teluk Intan-born businessman, 63, told FMT Lifestyle with a laugh.

And Chin’s dream did come true upon retirement, when he opened his café called “Dear, Patrick” in Bandar Sri Damansara here eight years ago.

This little eatery, known for its Western comfort food – burgers, hot dogs, pasta, and grilled dishes – has become a beloved neighbourhood staple, regularly frequented by hungry customers.

An abundance of warm wood and natural brown tones gives the interior of the café a rustic, homely charm.

Stepping into the space feels like a throwback to simpler times: its walls are adorned with vintage movie posters, and older visitors may experience a blast from the past, viewing older publications like Galaxie magazine covers framed up on display.

This retro vibe aligns perfectly with Chin’s vision for his café: he holds a deep fondness for the ’80s and ’90s, two eras filled with cherished memories for him.

“In those days though, you could only really have burgers and hot dogs at fast food places like A&W and KFC. You didn’t have all these cafes like you do today. But now my aim is to offer good food at affordable prices, so everyone can try and enjoy them,” Chin quipped.

But starting a café wasn’t easy, especially since Chin had no prior experience in the F&B industry.

The first month was particularly challenging: he and his team, however, overcame the initial hurdles, and have remained resilient ever since.

As is fitting for a family restaurant, many of Chin’s kin also help out. While Chin manages the operations, his wife helps with the financial side, and his eldest son Mervyn handles the marketing.

Most of the café’s menu is hearty, soul-warming fare: all food is made with 100% Muslim-friendly ingredients.

Their most popular dish is Patrick’s Sizzling Chicken, a perfectly seared, golden-brown chicken chop bathed in savoury mushroom sauce, with fries and a crisp salad on the side.

Also delightful is Patrick’s Go-To-Hotdog, topped with cream cheese and a dollop of honey mustard with caramelised onions. It may sound like an unconventional mix, but the ingredients come together in perfect harmony, delivering a truly unforgettable flavour experience.

The menu also includes scrumptious Asian fusion dishes, such as the crispy Mentaiko Fish Lava Bowl, and pasta such as beef stroganoff and chicken chop carbonara.

Also try their milkshakes: the Mocha Milkshake in particular is a frosty and flavourful treat.

According to Chin, the café’s wide menu selections came from his family’s adventurous dining spirit.

“I think we always need to try all kinds of food. My wife and children like a wide variety of cuisine. We eat together every Tuesday, and we decide what kind of food could suit our café,” Chin said, adding they change the menu every six or nine months.

Asked about potential expansion, Chin admitted the idea had certainly crossed his mind. However, he also believed keeping the café independent was the best way to maintain the quality of its food.

“I think everyone should be given the opportunity to try reasonably priced comfort food, in a place that takes you back to the ‘80s and ‘90s.

“And nothing makes us happier than serving a customer a nice plate of steak or chicken, and seeing them just light up!” Chin said.
