U Mobile Completes 78 Towers under JENDELA Plan, Surpassing Others

Kuching, Malaysia – U Mobile Sdn Bhd has made significant progress in completing the towers assigned to them under the National Digital Network Plan (JENDELA), with 78 out of 81 towers already completed, according to Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

Outpacing Other Telcos

According to Fahmi, U Mobile’s achievement is remarkable, as other telecommunications companies involved in the same project have taken longer to operationalize their towers. “We find at some places the towers have been completed for seven or eight months, even nine months, but are still not operational. So, I have asked the MCMC (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission) to review and issue directives to the telcos not to delay and to complete them as soon as possible,” he said.

SMART 600 Project Progress

During his visit to the JENDELA tower project in Kampung Sungai Aur, Fahmi also highlighted the progress made by the Sarawak government’s SMART 600 project. As of today, 325 towers have been completed and are now operational. “I hope that with the RM42 million funding provided by MCMC for the operation of these SMART 600 towers, more towers will be completed, and the people will benefit,” he said.

Pilot Project Launches LEO Satellite Technology

In another development, Fahmi announced that a pilot project using Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellite technology is set to be launched by mid-next year. This technology enables telecommunications services to be delivered directly to devices without needing to go through telecommunications towers. “This means that, wherever we are, as long as the sky is clear…and not in a forest, there will be a basic line that we can utilise, especially in emergencies,” he added.

Conclusion

In conclusion, U Mobile’s achievement in completing 78 towers under the JENDELA plan is a significant step forward in improving Malaysia’s digital infrastructure. The launch of the LEO satellite technology pilot project also promises to bring new opportunities for telecommunications services, particularly in areas where traditional infrastructure may not be available.
