KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 17 (Bernama) — Datuk Joehari Mohd Ayob is set to win the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president’s post unopposed as he’s the only candidate nominated ahead of the Feb 15 elections for the 2025-2029 term.
FAM Election Committee chairman Prof Datuk Dr Abdullah Mohamad Said said that Joehari, also the FAM vice-president for this term, was the only candidate for the top post when nominations closed at 5.30 pm yesterday.
The nomination list also revealed that the two incumbent deputy presidents – Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mahadi and Datuk S. Sivasundaram – are set to retain their positions.
Tan Sri Hamidin Mohd Amin, the FAM president since 2018, had previously announced that he would not be defending his post to let a new person take the association to a higher level.
Abdullah said they received 39 nominations vying for the 17 seats in the FAM Executive Committee since nominations opened on Dec 24 last year.
However, only 29 candidates are eligible to contest as the remaining 10 did not receive the minimum number of nominations as stipulated in Article 31, Paragraph 6, of the FAM Statute.
An individual needs a minimum of six nominations from the affiliates to vie for the president’s post; five for the deputy president’s post; four for the vice-president’s post; and two for the executive committee member post.
The 17 posts set to be contested at the FAM Congress are for president (one position), deputy presidents (two), vice-presidents (four) and executive committee members (10), including two seats allocated for women.
Abdullah said that Datuk Mohd Azhar Jamaluddin and Datuk Dollah Salleh, who are eligible to contest for two posts – namely vice-president and executive committee member – need to choose only one position to contest through their response in the Confirmation of Nomination Acceptance Form.
Abdullah added that all the eligible candidates must return the form, which will be given out by Thursday (Jan 23), by stating their agreement to contest for the posts nominated or otherwise.
"At the same time, the FAM Election Committee will also submit their names for an integrity screening process involving the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), as well as a bankruptcy status check with the Malaysian Insolvency Department (MdI).
"The FAM Election Committee will then announce the final list, which is the official name list of candidates eligible to contest this time, on/after Thursday or at the latest by Feb 8 (seven days before the Congress is held). The list will also be sent to all 18 affiliates for their information,” he said in a statement today.
Abdullah said that of the 18 affiliates, excluding the Perlis FA and Kelantan FA whose membership has been suspended, only nominations from 16 legitimate affiliates were accepted by the FAM Election Committee.
"One affiliate member did not submit the nomination form while another submitted an incomplete form,” he said.
