Immigration Department Cracks Down on Foreign Beggars in Johor

Operation Kutip and Jaja

In a recent operation, the Johor Immigration Department detained four foreign individuals for begging in a night market in Taman Nusa Perintis, Gelang Patah. The operation, dubbed "Ops Kutip and Ops Jaja," was conducted between 6:20 pm and 7:30 pm on October 28.

The Arrests

The four individuals arrested were two men from Thailand, a Cambodian man, and a man from Pakistan, all aged between 22 and 65. One of the suspects had an amputated right leg, while the others claimed they were raising funds for a tahfiz school or religious institute to gain sympathy.

The Findings

The Immigration Department found that the beggars had made up to RM12,000 a month or RM400 a day. This is a staggering amount, and it is clear that the beggars had chosen a strategic location to maximize their earnings.

The Misuse of Social Visit Pass

The Johor Immigration Department stated that the arrested individuals had misused their social visit pass. They were not authorized to engage in begging activities while in Malaysia.

The Operations

The operations were conducted following complaints from the public. The Immigration Department said, "A strategic location and Malaysians’ easily sympathetic nature made this a lucrative gig for the beggars. Their arrests proved they have misused their social visit pass."

Violations of the Immigration Act

The individuals arrested have violated Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Act 155) for not carrying a valid permit or pass while in Malaysia.

Conclusion

The Johor Immigration Department’s operation highlights the need for vigilance and enforcement in addressing the issue of foreign beggars in Malaysia. The department will continue to work to ensure that individuals who misuse their social visit pass are held accountable.
