Kajang satay declared Selangor heritage food

KAJANG: Kajang satay was declared a Selangor state heritage food today as part of efforts to ensure the dish is preserved and passed down from generation to generation.

Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, the consort of the sultan of Selangor, made the declaration in conjunction with a carnival on Kajang satay held here.

Selangor state executive councillor Borhan Aman Shah said Kajang satay was gazetted on July 31 as a historical object under a state law on Malay customs and heritage.

Kajang satay originated in Kajang around 1870 and is believed to have been introduced by the late Tasnim Kasiban along with his brother Rono in 1917.

“Since then, this legacy has been passed down through the generations, becoming one of the gastronomic icons that has brought recognition to Kajang, Selangor and Malaysia,” Borhan said.

Borhan said the state government had conducted a thorough study which confirmed that Kajang satay had its own unique identity.

This satay differs from other satay through its larger meat cuts weighing around 22g to 24g, servings of ketupat and vegetables, and grilling techniques passed down through the generations.

“Kajang satay consists of three main elements: protein-based ingredients like marinated meat or chicken, skewered on bamboo sticks and grilled, served with rich peanut sauce and unique satay sambal,” he said.

The two-day Kajang satay carnival, which began yesterday, provided an opportunity for local entrepreneurs to introduce their products to the public. Visitors were treated to free satay from 3pm, while various recreational activities were held for families and youth.
