PETALING JAYA: Ever wondered what campers actually cook and eat in the wild? Even better – ever wanted to enjoy delicious camp-style food, served in camping cutlery, under a tent… but without the bugs, heat, or campfire?

Kemsite Cafe, a camping-inspired eatery by outdoor living concept store Kemsite in Petaling Jaya, delivers exactly that. From thick, juicy cuts of meat to smoky skewers and fresh, zesty rice bowls, the menu is full of comforting Japanese flavours.

“We’re all campers ourselves – we love the outdoors and wanted to bring that vibe indoors,” said Derick Wee, the café’s marketing manager.

“That’s why our tagline is ‘outdoors inside’. We know not everyone has the time to go camping, so we created a place where people can enjoy that feeling,” he added.

And they’ve nailed the setting. Think tents over tables, camping chairs, battery-powered lanterns, and warm, woodsy touches throughout.

There’s even a cosy private room at the back – filled with plants, gravel flooring, and bathed in natural sunlight. It opens out to the back of the shop, making it a perfect chill-out spot for small groups looking to escape the city buzz.

As for the food, Wee said the team wanted to serve meals inspired by what people usually make on camping trips: “Easy to prepare, fast, and of course delicious.”

The Hamburg Rice is a real trailblazer of the menu albeit being very simple. You get a thick, juicy Japanese-style Angus beef patty – none of that flat, sad stuff here. It’s fresh, meaty, perfectly seasoned, and served with rice, omelette, and your choice of sauce.

Go classic with the Japanese curry (rich and hearty like a warm sleeping bag), or mix it up with black pepper and white cream sauce for that double-layered flavour tent. One thing’s for sure – you won’t leave hungry.

The Yakitori skewers platter feels like a full-on camp cookout. Everything’s grilled over open flames and has that irresistible smoky char – like food straight off a bonfire.

The platter includes all the hits: ribeye, salmon belly, enoki, lady fingers, wingettes, even juicy leeks. Dip them in a touch of togarashi or mustard, and you’ve got the perfect sharing dish to pass around the picnic table.

Then there’s the Aussie lamb cutlet. Grilled just right, the meat is tender, juicy, and has just the right amount of gamey umami to make you howl at the moon (in a good way). That spicy, sour dipping sauce? It adds a punchy twist that levels up the whole bite. Worth every sen – no survival gear required.

If you’re craving something lighter but still flavour-packed, the crab meat prawn tempura don is a fresh catch. The tempura is crunchy and golden, the crab meat sweet, and there’s a zesty citrus dressing that brightens it all up.

One bite and you’ll feel like you’re eating beside a mountain stream – clean, green, and oh-so-refreshing.

And don’t pack up without checking out their drinks. The BLACKacino is a chilled black coffee with a foamy twist – bold, smooth, and just what you need after a meal.

The matcha peach latte is an unexpected combo that works: the sweet peach syrup cuts through the earthy matcha, making it a breezy afternoon sip.

Craft beers, sake, umeshu, Japanese beers – you’ll find plenty of coolers chilling in the fridge, perfect to kick back, refuel, and forget you’re still in the middle of the city.

Whether you’re here for a solo escape, a relaxed hangout with friends, or just curious about what camping vibes taste like with air-conditioning, Kemsite Cafe delivers a cosy, outdoors-inside experience that hits the spot.
