Marvel Comics’ “Fantastic Four” have not had the best of runs when it comes to their cinematic outings.

The 2005 and 2007 iterations – produced by 20th Century Fox at the time – received mixed reviews. Then came the horrendous 2015 reboot, which felt uninspired and downright abominable.

Now, Matt Shakman’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” has officially and successfully introduced Marvel’s First Family into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

And if this film is any indication of what’s to come in Marvel Studios’ Phase 5, viewers are definitely in for a wild ride.

The 115-minute film, starring Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm), and Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm), immediately feels like a breath of fresh air compared to recent MCU offerings.

The stakes are high, the antagonist is seemingly unbeatable, and the retro-futuristic world with its pastel palette evokes the Fantastic Four cartoons of the late 1970s. Most importantly, the film has heart, something increasingly rare in the MCU.

From the opening scene, “First Steps” sets itself apart with a distinct tone, richer character treatment, and a fresh take on superhero presentation. While the basic premise – a group of heroes must stop a world-ending villain – may sound familiar, the film avoids becoming another factory-produced MCU entry.

Instead, it subverts expectations with compelling, layered characters and emotionally driven, heart-wrenching moments.

Plot-wise, “First Steps” launches the Fantastic Four into the MCU with a bold twist: the team is already formed, globally recognised, and facing their greatest threat yet.

Reed, Sue, Johnny, and Ben juggle interdimensional science, public fame, and the messy dynamics of family … until a cosmic anomaly shakes the foundations of Earth‑828.

As Galactus looms and the Silver Surfer streaks across the sky, the team must confront not just a universe-ending threat, but a personal sacrifice that could cost them everything.

For the first time in a long while in the MCU, the danger feels real. There’s nothing ambiguous, comedic, or debatable about Galactus and his herald, the Silver Surfer. The fear they evoke in the Fantastic Four is palpable.

Yet at the film’s core is family. The love these characters have for each other permeates every scene and drives the entire narrative.

Much of that emotional weight rests on the shoulders of the cast – especially Pascal’s Reed.

Known for playing nuanced, emotionally complex characters, Pascal brings a depth to Mr Fantastic that the MCU has long been missing. This isn’t a swaggering hero like Iron Man or Thor. Reed is conflicted and burdened, which makes him strikingly human.

Kirby, too, delivers an electrifying performance. As the group’s maternal figure, she exudes strength, groundedness, and quiet power, making her one of the film’s emotional anchors.

Quinn and Moss-Bachrach give equally powerful performances as the Human Torch and the Thing. They serve as the film’s comic relief, but the humour never feels forced or out of place. It feels organic – this is who they are, and the audience believes it.

Together, the cast brings the Fantastic Four to life with a chemistry that’s both believable and deeply affecting. That emotional connection only heightens the impact of what unfolds – including what comes after the credits.

The film features both a mid-credit and a post-credit scene – and, truth be told, the mid-credit scene is among the best the MCU has ever delivered. It’s short, but it will leave you breathless, give you goosebumps, and keep you buzzing long after the credits roll.

Ultimately, “First Steps” is a much-needed breath of fresh air for the MCU, one that signals, perhaps, that better days are finally on the horizon for Marvel Studios.

As of press time, ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ is screening in cinemas nationwide.
