Terengganu FC Seals Semifinal Berth with 2-0 Win over Negeri Sembilan FC

Terengganu FC (TFC) has all but secured a spot in the semifinals of the 2024 Malaysia Cup after defeating Negeri Sembilan FC (NSFC) 2-0 in the first leg quarter-final match at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi, Seremban, today.

First Half Dominance

The TFC squad, managed by Badrul Afzan Razali, dominated the first half, creating numerous chances to score. It took them until the 19th minute to break the deadlock, courtesy of skipper Muhammad Safawi Rasid’s goal. This injection of fresh blood into the visitors’ attack prompted them to continue launching waves of attack, with a near-miss in the 33rd minute, when a penalty box confusion almost resulted in an additional goal. However, Negeri goalkeeper Muhamad Aqil Abdul Razak’s brilliant save prevented the ball from entering the goal.

Second Half Pressure

The start of the second half saw the home team, NSFC, intensify their efforts, attempting to equalize, but ultimately failing to capitalize on the opportunities. The pressure on NSFC escalated when their import, Aliyu Audu Abu Bakar, was shown a red card by referee Muhammad Usaid Jamal for a foul on Nor Hakim Hassan in the 78th minute, leaving them to play with 10 men.

Penalty and Second Goal

TFC’s Head Coach K. Nathakumar’s boys continued to struggle, giving away a penalty in the 85th minute when Muhamad Aqil brought down TFC import Nelson Bonilla Sanchez in the penalty box. Nelson Bonilla made no mistake, picking himself up to beat Muhammad Aqil in goal and secure a 2-0 advantage for TFC going into the second leg.

Conclusion

TFC’s convincing win sets them up well for the second leg, and they will be confident of reaching the semifinals. The question is, can NSFC mount a successful comeback, or will TFC’s dominance prove too much to overcome?
