Scaling Up AI Adoption Across the Civil Service

About 445,000 public officers will soon have access to Google Workspace’s Gemini suite, scaling up artificial intelligence (AI) adoption across the civil service.

AI at Work 2.0: Enhancing Service Delivery

The initiative, launched by digital minister Gobind Singh Deo, aims to equip public servants with Google Workspace’s latest generative AI capabilities to enhance service delivery.

A First-Hand Look at the Pilot Programme

The first phase of the programme, AI at Work, was introduced in December 2024 alongside the launch of Malaysia’s National AI Office (NAIO). The pilot programme was conducted with 270 public officers from various government agencies, testing AI integration in government workflows.

Pilot Programme Results

Feedback and usage data from the pilot programme showed that 97% of the participants saved an average of 3.25 hours per week, according to Google Cloud Asia Pacific managing director of public sector business Rahul Sharma.

“About 91% of them also reported that generative and Agentic AI has helped enhance the quality of their work,” he said.

Training Public Officers for AI Adoption

AI at Work 2.0 will train public officers to maximise Google Workspace with Gemini through hands-on workshops on effective prompts and high-impact use cases.

Google Cloud’s Partnership with NAIO

The partnership between NAIO and Google Cloud aims to harness generative AI with the right safeguards in place to better serve the rakyat under Malaysia’s five-year AI technology action plan.

“Through AI at Work 2.0 by NAIO and Google Cloud, the government is taking the lead in harnessing generative AI — with the right safeguards in place — to better serve the rakyat under our five-year AI technology action plan,” said Gobind.

Conclusion

The AI at Work 2.0 initiative is a significant step towards scaling up AI adoption across the civil service. With the training and support provided, public officers will be equipped to maximise the benefits of AI and enhance service delivery. The results of the pilot programme are promising, and it will be interesting to see the impact of this initiative on the civil service in the long run.
