KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian entertainment industry is grieving the loss of veteran actor Lan Zailan, who passed away early this morning after a brief but intense battle with stage-four pancreatic cancer. He was 66.
Lan Zailan, whose real name was Zailan Kamarudin, took his last breath at 4.20am at the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM). His daughter, Fariza Zailan, confirmed the heartbreaking news. “My father was initially hospitalized for a persistent cough, but on Nov 27, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, which had already spread to his liver and lungs,” she shared.
Funeral prayers will be held at the As-Salam Mosque in Puchong Perdana, followed by his burial at the USJ 22 Muslim Cemetery. Lan Zailan is survived by his wife, Ruby Sara Omar, and five children, who are now mourning the loss of a loving husband and father.
Hafiz Nafiah, Secretary-General of the Malaysian Artistes’ Association (Seniman), described Lan Zailan’s death as a profound loss to the nation’s creative arts. “He was a gem in the industry, and his passing leaves a void that cannot be filled,” Hafiz said in a statement, extending condolences on behalf of the association.
Lan Zailan’s career spanned over four decades, where he became a household name for his remarkable roles in films like Santan Berlada and Rumah Kedai, as well as popular TV dramas including Kisah Benar and Gerak Khas. His talent and dedication to his craft made him a beloved figure in Malaysian cinema.
