MCA President Wee Ka Siong: Party Should Focus on Winning Seats in State and National Elections, Not Internal Party Polls

MCA president Wee Ka Siong has dismissed claims that the party was advised to withdraw from the upcoming Sabah state elections, calling it "political analysis" that should not be entertained.

It is normal for such rumors to be spread ahead of elections, Wee said, adding that he is not restricting anyone’s right to make their own analysis. "It’s fine, let them talk," he told reporters after MCA’s 76th anniversary celebration at the party’s headquarters.

Wee emphasized that the party’s focus should be on preparing for upcoming state and general elections, rather than internal party elections. "The internal election is not our focus right now. Instead, winning more seats (in state and general elections) is our priority," he said.

Wee cautioned that if the party fails to win any seats for five consecutive years, it will gradually fade from the public eye and lose its ability to fulfill MCA’s aspirations. "If we fail to win any seats for five consecutive years, we will gradually fade from the public eye and lose our ability to fulfill MCA’s aspirations," he said.

The party’s priority, Wee stressed, is to win more seats in the next state and general elections. "Winning more seats (in state and general elections) is our priority," he said.

Wee’s comments come after a source was quoted by FMT as saying that Barisan Nasional would be represented by Umno and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah in the next Sabah election, while ally MCA would be advised to sit out the contest and help the coalition’s candidates.

The 2020 state election saw MCA lose all four seats it contested in, while the last state election saw BN win 14 seats and form the state government until a failed coup to oust chief minister Hajiji Noor in January 2023. BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had previously said the coalition would join forces with Pakatan Harapan for the Sabah polls, which must be held before the end of the year.

The party’s priority is to prepare for the upcoming state and general elections, rather than internal party elections. This is a crucial step in ensuring the party’s continued relevance and ability to fulfill its aspirations.
