CYBERJAYA: Immanuel Santosh was deep in sleep when the jingling of a tiny bell began to echo through his loft. Groggy and confused, he dragged himself downstairs in the middle of the night to investigate.

What he found made him stop in his tracks – Isla, his six-month-old rabbit, had chewed off her collar and was now triumphantly swinging it from her mouth like a prize.

“I bought her that collar with a bell so I could always know where she was,” Immanuel said with a chuckle. “When I saw her, I was just like… my God, what did you pull off this time?”

That’s Isla – a fluffy, grey Holland Lop with a shy nature and a not-so-secret mischievous streak. While she may look like a calm island breeze, she’s more of a quiet storm, especially when no one’s watching.

“When you’re around, she’s all shy and reserved. But the moment you’re asleep or not home – that’s when she gets really active,” Immanuel explained. “I’ve lost speakers, a lamp, almost an air purifier… she just finds her way into everything.”

Immanuel, a 23-year-old architecture student from Ayer Keroh, Melaka, currently lives alone in Cyberjaya. He had always dreamed of having a pet but wasn’t allowed to keep any growing up.

So, when his friends surprised him last October with a tiny, one-month-old rabbit as a belated birthday gift, it was a dream come true.

And like all dreams, she needed a name. That came in a flash of inspiration. “One of my friends put a flower on her head when I first got her – it kind of looked like an orchid. The picture gave me these island girl vibes. So I was like, okay, let’s drop the ‘nd’ from ‘island’ and just call her Isla. It fits her.”

But naming her was the easy part – rabbit-proofing his home was a whole other story.

“I thought I had everything figured out. I’d done my research before getting her. I assumed she wouldn’t be able to reach certain spots, like the wires on top of the cabinet. But somehow, she did.

“Every week, I’d discover a new thing she could do – she could jump higher, squeeze into tighter spaces. It became this ongoing learning experience.”

Eventually, Immanuel had to set up a large enclosure – not to confine her, but to give her enough space to move freely and safely. Despite the chaos, Isla has brought more joy than trouble into Immanuel’s life.

“She’s got attitude, for sure,” he said. “She’ll stomp her feet if she doesn’t like something. If I hold her, she tries to hop out. She’s really unpredictable, but in a funny way. I just laugh and shake my head.”

That fiery little personality might keep him on his toes, but it’s also what fills the quiet corners of his life. Living alone, Immanuel has found unexpected companionship in Isla’s quirky presence.

“I just treat her like a housemate,” he said. “When I come home from my internship, I’ll talk to her about my day. Like, ‘Guess what I bought today?’ or ‘You won’t believe what happened!’ It sounds silly, but it feels like having a friend to come home to.”

And like any good friend, she’s made her mark – quite literally. From chewed cables to stolen collars, Isla’s mischief fills the home with laughter, frustration, and warmth in equal measure.

“I think she just makes this house feel less empty,” Immanuel smiled.
