Melaka, Feb 14 (Bernama) — Para tenpin bowler Muhammad Mulhim Md Jani, who won two gold and a silver medal in his debut at the 2024 Malaysia Para Games (Para Sukma XXI) hosted by Sarawak, now dreams of a bigger strike in the next Para Sukma.

Muhammad Mulhim, 30, achieved his success of one gold medal each in the Men’s Singles tenpin bowling event and the Doubles Open, as well as a silver medal in the Trio Open at the 2024 Sarawak Para Sukma.

Short Training Period, Big Rewards

"I only started getting serious in tenpin bowling in 2021 after meeting my coach Abu Bakar Nyat, before undergoing training and being selected to represent Melaka at the Para Sukma in Sarawak last year," he said. "Although I had quite a short training period of three years and did not set any targets, I am grateful to have won medals for Melaka," he added.

Unwavering Support from Family and Coach

Muhammad Mulhim, who has a left-hand disability, attributed his achievements to the unwavering moral support from his manager, coach, assistant, and family where he is the eighth child of nine siblings.

Preparing for 2026 Para Sukma

The native of Bemban, Jasin, said he is now undergoing intensive training with his teammates as preparation for the 2026 Para Sukma in Selangor.

"For the 2026 Selangor Sukma, I aim to maintain the medals I have won at the 2024 Para Sukma in Sarawak, but it will also depend on the coach," he said, who received a RM10,000 incentive from the state for his medal success in Sarawak.

Para Swimmer Shines with Three Gold Medals

Meanwhile, Para swimmer Ong Jia Xuan, 21, who won three gold and one silver medal, said the 2024 Sarawak Para Sukma recorded her best achievement in her third participation.

The left-handed disabled swimmer said the three gold medals came in the women’s 50 metres (m) freestyle, the 100m breaststroke and the 100m freestyle while the silver came in the women’s 100m backstroke.

Preparing for Next Year’s Para Sukma

The native of Kota Laksamana, who started swimming since age 12, said in the two previous editions of the Para Sukma, she only won silver and bronze medals.

"For next year’s Para Sukma, I hope to win gold medals in all the swimming events I enter," said Ong, who received RM18,000 as reward for her achievements.

State Government Incentives

Earlier today, the state government disbursed RM99,775 in incentives to 20 athletes, team managers, and coaches who brought home medals from the 2024 Sarawak Para Sukma.
