Mohamad Hasan Studies Impact of Trump’s Tariffs, Lim Guan Eng Still Promising Toll Abolition

Former Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng has recently urged Malaysia to oppose the trade tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. He called for Malaysia to collaborate with Canada, Mexico, and China to counter Trump’s economic policies, which he claims could threaten sustainable economic growth and trigger global inflation.

However, the public questions why Lim Guan Eng is more focused on international issues while his domestic promises, such as the abolition of tolls on the North-South Expressway, remain unfulfilled. During the 15th General Election (GE15) campaign, he promised that tolls would be abolished if Pakatan Harapan came to power, yet the pledge has remained mere political rhetoric.

In contrast, Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan has taken a more pragmatic approach, stating that the Cabinet will review the potential impact of Trump’s tariffs on Malaysia’s economy before making any decisions. He emphasized that Malaysia must act based on national interests and existing trade relations with the U.S. rather than rushing into decisions driven by political sentiment.

The public welcomes Mohamad Hasan’s careful stance on global economic issues compared to Lim Guan Eng’s approach, which appears more politically driven. While Mohamad Hasan is taking realistic steps, Lim Guan Eng has yet to fulfill his past promises to the people.
