Rehabilitation and Mental Well-being: The Key to Ng Tze Yong’s Road to Recovery

The National Sports Institute (NSI) has taken a holistic approach to help men’s singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong recover from his back injuries, providing him with psychological assistance rather than instant medication.

A Holistic Approach to Recovery

NSI’s Chief Executive Officer, Ahmad Faedzal Md Ramli, emphasized that the organization is committed to ensuring Tze Yong’s full recovery, stating, "We are in constant contact with Tze Yong and, even during the rehabilitation process at NSI, we not only focused on injury rehabilitation but also how he can overcome the mental barrier because whenever athletes are in the rehab phase, their mental state is quite fragile."

Mental Health Support

Faedzal added, "I believe that is the process being taken with Tze Yong. In any sport, athletes must work together with us so that we can face the challenges together and be open enough to tell us what other problems they have so that we can help them."

Challenges Ahead

Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) coaching director Rexy Mainaky revealed that Tze Yong is still struggling to cope with the trauma of his back injuries, which have forced him to miss out on the 2024 Olympic Games. Mainaky stated, "Although Tze Yong has rejoined training, he is still struggling to cope with the trauma of the two back injuries he suffered."

The Road to Recovery

Tze Yong’s journey to recovery began with a muscle tear in his back at the 2024 Malaysia Open, followed by a spinal injury at the 2024 Badminton Asia Team Championship (BATC). He underwent a series of surgeries, but his road to recovery has been marked by setbacks and challenges.

A Rare Case

NSI medical specialist Dr. Jasmiza Khuzairi commented on the rarity of Tze Yong’s case, stating, "Out of the 2,000 operations conducted at NSI, only two such operations have been carried out."

Conclusion

Ng Tze Yong’s recovery is a testament to the importance of a holistic approach to rehabilitation, one that addresses both physical and mental well-being. With the support of NSI and ABM, Tze Yong is on the path to recovery, and with time, patience, and perseverance, he will return to the sport he loves.
