NEW YORK: The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has issued a dire warning that Palestinians in Gaza are now entirely dependent on humanitarian aid. This comes as the UN’s ability to fulfill its mandate continues to deteriorate, according to the Palestinian News and Information Agency (WAFA).
In a post on platform X, UNRWA shared the heartbreaking story of Jamila, an elderly Palestinian woman who has lost her home and access to medications due to Israeli restrictions on UNRWA operations in the region.
“I have to walk long distances to reach a clinic in Khan Younis for medication. I suffer from chronic illnesses, but there is no medicine available,” said Jamila, 80. She explained how her life once relied entirely on UNRWA for healthcare and education for herself, her children, and grandchildren. Now, she faces an uncertain future, asking, “Who will help us if UNRWA is no longer here?”
The agency emphasized, “In war-torn Gaza, civilians like Jamila are wholly reliant on humanitarian aid, while the UN’s ability to execute its mandate is severely hindered.”
UNRWA reiterated its call for an immediate ceasefire, highlighting that Israel continues to restrict the entry of aid into Gaza, worsening the humanitarian crisis, particularly in the northern areas. The agency accused Israel of refusing to cooperate with international organizations and the UN to allow the delivery of essential food, medicine, and supplies.
