Women’s Doubles Pair Wins Malaysia Super 100 2024 Championship
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20 (BERNAMA) –
Women’s Doubles Champions
The national women’s doubles pair of Teoh Mei Xing and Go Pei Kee emerged as champions of the Malaysia Super 100 2024 when they defeated the top-seeded pair of Nicole Gonzales Chan and Yang Chu Yun with a 22-20, 21-11 victory at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur.
The world’s 112th-ranked pair, who started partnering in June, took 42 minutes to overcome their opponents in the final. Mei Xing said that they changed their strategy in the second set, opting for longer rallies as they were playing against the wind.
Future Uncertainty for Mei Xing and Pei Kee
On the flip side, Mei Xing expressed her uncertainty about continuing to partner with Pei Kee as the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has announced that all women’s pairs, except for Pearly Tan and M.Thinaah, would have to wait for confirmation following an assessment by the new head coach.
"We can see we are improving, but it is still a long journey. It’s a work in progress and we just keep going," Mei Xing said.
Mixed Doubles and Men’s Singles Finals
In other results, Taiwanese Chi Yu Jen won the men’s singles title after defeating Jason Teh 21-12, 21-23, 21-15, while Japan’s Kaoru Sugiyama won the women’s singles title after overcoming compatriot Manami Suizu 21-18, 21-14.
The mixed doubles title was won by Ye Hong Wei and Nicole Gonzales Chan of Taiwan, who defeated Japan’s Yuichi Shimogami and Sayaka Hobara 21-19, 12-21, 22-20.
Men’s Doubles Pair Sets Sights on Breaking into World’s Top 32
Meanwhile, national professional men’s doubles pair, Low Hang Yee and Ng Eng Cheong, who won the gold medal in the tournament, said their focus would now shift towards breaking into the world’s top 32.
"We just play our game like normal and don’t put pressure on ourselves. Because last year we lost in the final, so this year we just didn’t think too much, didn’t let ourselves get pressured," said Eng Cheong.
The pair, currently ranked 52nd in the world, won the championship after defeating Chen Zhi Yi and Presley Smith from the United States 19-21, 21-15, 21-12 in the final.
