GEORGE TOWN, March 26 – Over a month after Dato’ G Kumaar Aamaan’s public warning on February 21, 2025, urging Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow to take immediate action on Penang Bridge safety, another tragic incident has occurred. A 48-year-old man from Bayan Lepas was found drowned after jumping from Kilometer 5.5 of the bridge, reigniting concerns about the government’s failure to act.
Repeated Tragedies, No Action Taken
Back in February, Dato’ G Kumaar Aamaan had strongly warned the Chief Minister that without preventive measures, more lives would be lost. Yet, despite advancements in modern architecture and technology, no visible steps have been taken to improve safety on the bridge.
“How many more people must die before Chow Kon Yeow acts? This is not the first case, and it won’t be the last if immediate safety measures aren’t implemented. His failure to act makes him unfit to lead, and I call on him to resign,” said Dato’ G Kumaar Aamaan.
Latest Incident: Search and Rescue in Progress
A search and rescue operation was launched after Timur Laut police chief Abdul Rozak Muhammad confirmed that a man had fallen from the bridge. The incident was reported at 12:21 AM, and at Km6.7 of the bridge (Perai-bound), authorities found an abandoned white Proton Iswara, a pair of shoes, and a bag belonging to the missing person.
The vehicle is registered to a 64-year-old local from Jelutong, Penang, and his next of kin have been informed. A search operation began at 10:30 AM, but the individual has yet to be found.
Dato’ G Kumaar Aamaan’s Demand for Immediate Action
The Penang Bridge, a symbol of economic growth, is becoming a site of repeated tragedies. Dato’ G Kumaar Aamaan demands that Chow Kon Yeow implement immediate safety measures, such as:
Higher safety barriers to prevent suicide attempts.
Advanced surveillance and emergency response systems.
Public safety campaigns to prevent further loss of life.
“I warned him on February 21, yet nothing was done. If Chow Kon Yeow refuses to take responsibility, he should step down immediately. The people of Malaysia deserve a leader who prioritizes their safety,” he stated.
If the state government has no concrete solutions, Dato’ G Kumaar Aamaan is ready to propose immediate safety measures to prevent further tragedies on the Penang Bridge
