PETALING JAYA: When Pie, a beloved border collie belonging to her boyfriend, suddenly passed away in 2020, entrepreneur Kelly Yan was stricken by grief. But the heartbreak of losing a dear companion was only made worse by the distressing experience that followed.
“The crematorium workers treated my pet like she was rubbish. They simply tossed it into the fire. To make things worse, some family members didn’t want us to keep her ashes, and insisted we scatter them elsewhere. It was a very painful experience,” Yan told FMT Lifestyle.
“It made me wonder, why is it in this country, we have so many pet-friendly cafés and spaces, but when it comes to the end of our pets’ lives, they’re often treated like they don’t matter?”
Determined that no other pet owner should have to endure what she did, Yan founded Piepie Pet Memorial in 2021, a loving tribute to the dog she loved and lost.
Since then, they have conducted about 3,000 memorial services, helping many grieving pet owners give their animal friends a meaningful farewell.
Whether its dogs, cats, rabbits or hamsters—or even birds, lizards, meerkats, or fish—each pet is honoured for the joy and companionship they brought into their owners’ lives.

Yan recalled her very first client – a devoted pet owner who drove all the way from Johor to Kuala Lumpur in search of a proper goodbye.
At the time, Yan’s company had no office, so the farewell ceremony took place by the roadside, with a makeshift memorial in the back of a car.
While unconventional, the memorial service helped bring closure for her client, which Yan said was what truly mattered.
Today, Piepie Pet Memorial operates from a cosy and inviting space in Tropicana, Petaling Jaya, with a second branch in Cheras.
The company offers to assist bereaved pet owners with everything they need to say their final goodbyes, from arranging funeral and cremation services to preparing memento keepsakes of their much-loved pets.
Various memorial packages are available from the simple to the elaborate. The office contains a columbarium for those who may not have a suitable place to display their pet’s ashes.
Also provided are keepsake jewellery services, where owners can keep some of their deceased pet’s hair or ashes in pendants or bracelets for remembrance.

Yan said her company is the first in Malaysia to offer formal farewell ceremonies for pet owners. Here, a dedicated pet funeral director gently guides owners to say goodbye to their beloved animal companions.
The process involves helping them express their love, process any feelings of guilt, appreciate their pet’s life, and find peace in the final farewell.
The company also provides counselling through follow-up outreach. Within a week or two of the ceremony, their grief support team checks with their clients to offer counselling and emotional support.
Memorials can also be conducted according to an owner’s religious and cultural beliefs: priests and monks can be invited to conduct a service upon their availability.

Dealing with death is never easy, and Yan said the job could sometimes be challenging. Not just mentally and emotionally, but physically as well.
Sometimes, her staff go to great lengths to retrieve a pet’s body for a funeral. Once, a team member waded into the middle of a lake to retrieve a dog who had drowned.
Despite this, Yan said she believed they were doing meaningful work, and helping a bereaved pet owner find closure was a deep and rewarding experience.
She also noted how attitudes toward pet loss had evolved over time.
“In the past, some people would just brush things like this off. They’d say, ‘It’s just a pet, get another one.’ But now, more people recognise the deep emotional bond we share with our animals.
“Closure is so important when we lose someone we love, and that’s especially true for our pets. We hope to continue supporting pet owners in saying goodbye with dignity, grace and love,” she said.
