PUTRAJAYA, 3 February 2025 – Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s position as president of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) is not expected to face any competition during the party’s elections in May, according to Anwar’s political secretary, Shamsul Iskandar Akin. However, internal sources indicate that there is a high likelihood that Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli will face a challenge for his position as deputy president, with several prominent party figures reportedly preparing to contest the role.
Shamsul confirmed that discussions are ongoing to ensure both Anwar and Rafizi retain their respective posts uncontested. He added that the PKR elections for the central leadership council, as well as the women’s and youth wing leaderships, will take place as planned on May 24.
“As part of internal negotiations, the top two posts are expected to remain uncontested. We are focused on ensuring stability and continuity in leadership,” Shamsul explained during a press conference following a “2025 back to school” program in Tambun, Perak.
While the party leadership has reportedly agreed to leave Anwar’s and Rafizi’s posts unchallenged, internal sources reveal that one of the ministers, along with other influential party figures, is set to challenge Rafizi’s position. This suggests that, despite the focus on unity, competition for the deputy president role is heating up among PKR’s key figures.
“These high-ranking leaders are keen on contesting for leadership roles and see the deputy president’s post as crucial for advancing their political agendas within the party,” the sources said.
Shamsul reassured that these internal negotiations are part of the democratic process within PKR. “Democracy is about having open dialogue and discussions. Even when posts remain uncontested, it’s a sign of healthy negotiations and mutual agreement within the party,” he added.
As the party prepares for its leadership elections in May, PKR is also focusing on its role in the ruling government and gearing up for the upcoming 16th general election, with party leadership seen as key to its future success.
