KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 29 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim did not attend the Chinese New Year Open House organized by the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) today as he was in Ipoh, Perak, for official duties.
MCA President Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong explained that the party had officially invited Anwar and he had personally contacted the Prime Minister three days ago. However, Anwar informed him that he would not be in Kuala Lumpur on the day of the event.
“As usual, we sent an official invitation, and I personally reached out to the Prime Minister. However, I was informed that he would be in Ipoh,” said Ka Siong when speaking to the media at Wisma MCA, Jalan Ampang.
According to Ka Siong, Anwar had attended MCA’s Open House twice since assuming the Prime Minister’s position.
Zahid Hamidi Represents Government at MCA’s Open House
Despite Anwar’s absence, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi attended the event on behalf of the government, along with other Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders.
Ahmad Zahid arrived at approximately 9:30 AM, dressed in a batik shirt, and spent over an hour with MCA leaders. As part of the tradition, he also participated in the ‘yee sang’ tossing ceremony, which symbolizes prosperity and success in Chinese culture.
Other distinguished guests included BN Deputy Chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, MIC Deputy President Datuk Seri M. Saravanan, former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, BN Secretary-General Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, UMNO Supreme Council Member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, and the Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia, Ouyang Yujing.
MCA’s Open House is an annual event aimed at strengthening interracial ties and reinforcing political cooperation within the unity government.
