Commercial Crimes in Malaysia: A Growing Concern
Daily Losses Reach RM7.9 Million
KUALA LUMPUR: The Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) has recorded a total of 30,724 cases of commercial crimes from January to December 15, resulting in a staggering daily loss of RM7.9 million.
According to CCID director Ramli Yoosuf, the total losses reached RM2.77 billion, a 44% increase from the RM1.92 billion recorded last year. Despite a 3% drop in the number of cases compared to the same period last year, the police are concerned about the increasing losses.
Charges in Court
A total of 13,721 investigation papers have led to charges in court, with 45% of cases resulting in charges. This is slightly more than the 13,450 cases during the same period last year.
Ramli attributed the drop in commercial crime cases to greater public awareness, but emphasized that the police will continue to double their efforts to combat and prevent such cases.
Loan Shark Issue Remains a Concern
Separately, Ramli highlighted the increasing cases of unlicensed money lenders or loan sharks, with 977 cases in 2021, 989 in 2022, 1,162 in 2023, and 981 cases this year as of November. As a result of various operations and raids, police arrested 4,737 people for loan shark-related offences over the past four years.
Ramli expressed frustration at the persistence of the loan shark issue, stating that even daily operations to curb such activities cannot put an end to the problem due to public demand. He emphasized the need for public awareness to combat the issue.
Conclusion
The statistics highlight the growing concern of commercial crimes in Malaysia, with daily losses reaching RM7.9 million. While there has been a drop in the number of cases, the increasing losses are a cause for concern. The police will continue to work to combat and prevent commercial crimes, but the public’s awareness and cooperation are crucial in addressing the issue.
