Royal Title Tarnished: Public Demands Stern Action Against Tan Sri Involved in Corruption

Must Read

Kuala Lumpur, 29 May 2025 – Malaysians are voicing their growing disappointment and outrage over the abuse of power by certain individuals bearing the “Tan Sri” honorific, following reports of their involvement in public fund misappropriation. This has sparked concerns about the dignity and credibility of royal titles, which are meant to reflect the nation’s highest standards of honor, service, and integrity.

Public calls are mounting for such titles to be revoked if the holders are convicted, particularly in cases involving corruption, abuse of power, and money laundering.

This follows recent action by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), which seized nearly RM32 million worth of luxury assets from a highway concessionaire holding the “Tan Sri” title. The seized assets included nine luxury vehicles such as Bentleys and Mercedes-Benzes, 217 branded watches, over RM4 million in jewelry, high-end handbags, cash, and a private collection of exclusive alcoholic beverages worth RM3 million.

These actions are part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged misappropriation of sukuk funds meant for the construction of highways in the Klang Valley.

Public Demands Transparency

Civil society leaders, NGOs, and netizens have taken to various platforms to express their dissatisfaction, urging the Chief Secretary to the Government and the Council of Royal Honors to thoroughly review all titles granted to corporate figures and politicians currently under investigation by enforcement agencies.

> “It’s time we reassess the true meaning behind titles like ‘Tan Sri’. Does the title still hold prestige when it is linked to hundreds of millions in public fund abuse?” said one anti-corruption activist who requested anonymity.

The activist stressed that Malaysians must be reassured that state honors are not to be used as a shield for the elite who break the law.

MACC Urged to Probe Entire Network

Ottrangknews has learned that the investigation involving the Tan Sri is still ongoing, with MACC now tracing a wider network of individuals and entities potentially acting as accomplices or financial proxies.

> “The public doesn’t want just the ‘big fish’ caught. They want the entire network – from top to bottom – brought to justice,” said a senior lawyer experienced in AMLA-related cases.

Calls for Palace Intervention

There are also growing voices urging the Istana Negara (National Palace) to symbolically intervene to help restore faith in the nation’s honors system.

> “If convicted, revoke the Tan Sri title. This isn’t about revenge – it’s about protecting the monarchy’s reputation and the trust of the people,” said an academic during a public forum on integrity.

Ottrangknews will continue to follow developments in this case and provide updates from MACC, the courts, and relevant authorities.
