Russian Troops Suffer Worst Month for Casualties Since Ukraine War Began

Casualties Reach Alarming Proportions

Russian troops have suffered their worst month for casualties since the country’s war with Ukraine began almost three years ago, according to the head of Britain’s armed forces. UK Chief of the Defence Staff Tony Radakin revealed that an average of around 1,500 Russian soldiers were killed or injured per day in October, the heaviest toll since Moscow launched the full-scale invasion of its neighbour in February 2022.

Russia’s Losses "Enormous"

Radakin described the Russian nation as being about to suffer 700,000 people killed or wounded, stating that this was the "enormous pain and suffering that the Russian nation is having to bear because of (President Vladimir) Putin’s ambition." He acknowledged that Russia was making territorial gains, but emphasized that the losses were "for tiny increments of land."

Russian Government Strains

Radakin also highlighted the significant strain the Russian government is under due to its military spending. The country is spending more than 40% of its public expenditure on defence and security, which is putting a massive strain on the state.

UK’s Unwavering Support for Ukraine

The UK has been a strong supporter of Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression, providing billions of pounds in military aid, weapons, and troop training. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has reiterated Britain’s "ironclad" support for Ukraine, and Radakin reinforced this commitment, stating that the UK would support Ukraine for "as long as it takes."

A Message to President Putin

Radakin addressed a direct message to President Putin, stating, "That’s the message President Putin has to absorb and the reassurance for (Ukrainian) President (Volodymyr) Zelensky."
