PETALING JAYA: It was a day dedicated to smiles, sneakers, and a strong sense of community as hundreds of participants made their way to the Kompleks Sukan PKNS here last week.

The sense of excitement was evident in the air as they warmed up and prepared themselves for the “Walk for Autism 2025”, a community event aimed at promoting awareness, acceptance and empowerment.

The event, which took place on Saturday April 26, was hosted by Taarana School under the Raise Yourself To Help Mankind (RYTHM) Foundation, the social impact arm of multinational conglomerate the QI Group.

Taarana School principal Sunitha Sivakumaran told FMT Lifestyle that the idea for this event was sparked after the school dedicated a day to raise awareness for individuals with autism every year.

Later it was decided that the commemoration should be taken to a higher level by involving members of the wider community.

This marks the third successful year the event has been held.

“I think it all went well. We had about 125 people turn up, which I thought was pretty good considering the weather looked a bit gloomy this morning. I think overall, it went smoothly and we all had a good time,” Sunitha said.

Organised in conjunction with World Autism Month, the walk aims to shine a spotlight on autism awareness, while celebrating neurodiversity, and reaffirming the community’s commitment to a more inclusive society where individuals on the autism spectrum are not only embraced, but empowered.

The event began with an invigorating warm-up session, before participants began their 3.3 km walk around the sports complex. Students, family members, educators, advocates, and members of the public walked side by side, eager to raise visibility for autism inclusion.

The first 50 walkers who completed the route were awarded medals, while every participant received an e-certificate as a token of appreciation.

The event also involved a range of engaging activities after the walk. There were games, educational booths, therapy resource stations, and vocational training information. These were all aimed at creating a more informed and supportive environment for neurodiverse individuals.

Also present at the event were strategic partners Dive Heart Malaysia, SEN Master Academy, Autism Café Project and Sun Rehab.

“I’m glad to see so many members of the community coming together for this project. I think overall this has been a great opportunity for people, parents especially, to watch and support the potential of children on the spectrum,” Sunitha said.

She hoped the campaign would illustrate to the public that inclusion was more than just a one-day campaign, but a journey to be lived out every single day.

One happy winner of the walk was 55-year-old Pushpangathan Purushothaman, one of the first 30 participants in the adult category to cross the finish line.

“I really enjoyed the walk. It’s always nice when something you enjoy doing leads to a meaningful achievement,” Pushpangathan told FMT Lifestyle.

“I’m grateful to have taken part in this initiative. I think it was a wonderful event for an important cause. I truly hope it helps raise awareness of autism and fosters a more inclusive and accepting atmosphere for those on the spectrum.”
