PETALING JAYA: Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (PGRS) Youth has hit out at Warisan’s Azis Jamman for politicising Sabah’s oil and gas, saying his remarks risk undermining the state’s financial stability and progress.
PGRS Youth exco member Gordon Horace Chin said the Warisan information chief’s statements showed a lack of understanding of the industry.
“Azis speaks loudly, but it is clear he doesn’t understand the oil and gas industry, nor the structure of production sharing contracts, risk profiles in upstream ventures, or the massive responsibilities that come with managing public funds.
“If (his remarks are) followed, they would put Sabah’s finances at risk and sabotage the very progress our state has worked so hard to achieve,” Chin said in a statement.
Earlier today, Azis said Sabah’s continued reliance on sub-contracting and concession distribution of its O&G instead of taking a more direct role is why the state lacks technical expertise and capital in the field.
Azis was responding to Sabah finance minister Masidi Manjun, who said yesterday that Sabah International Petroleum (SIP) and SMJ Energy were not bidding for O&G blocks due to a lack of technical expertise and capital.
“If we claim we lack expertise, why not recruit and appoint true experts? Find and hire qualified professionals, not political loyalists whose only skills are to plunder and pander.
“And if Sabah has no experience, how will we ever gain experience if we never start?” The Star reported Azis as saying.
However, Chin said the GRS-led government had taken a strategic approach instead through state-owned SMJ Energy, which is focused on “acquiring profitable, producing assets while securing rights to take part in exploration only after discoveries are made”.
“This is responsible leadership, not hesitation,” he said.
He also dismissed Azis’s criticism that Sabah was not involved in upstream projects.
“Azis mocks SMJ Energy for not ‘diving in’ upstream, but he forgets (or chooses to ignore) that under the commercial collaboration agreement with Petronas, Sabah already holds significant stakes,” he said.
He pointed out that SMJ Energy owns 50% in the Samarang production sharing contract, 10% in LNG9, and 25% in Samur.
“The company is not a concept. It is a RM5 billion entity delivering real returns of RM160 million dividends to the government to date.
“It’s clear Warisan is frustrated by this government’s success. But trying to mislead the public with half-truths and political spin won’t change the facts.
“Sabah is finally turning the corner on years of financial mismanagement and that’s precisely because the current leadership is focused on solutions, not slogans,” he said.
