Thank You to the Kedah State Government for Thaipusam Holiday – Sivakumar

In another development, the Hindu Temples and Associations Council of Malaysia (MAHIMA) expressed gratitude to the Kedah State Government for approving a special holiday in celebration of Thaipusam on February 11. This approval demonstrates the Kedah State Government’s respect for the Hindu community, especially in allowing them to celebrate the festival meaningfully.

MAHIMA President, Datuk Seri N Sivakumar, stated that this decision reflects the state government’s commitment to unity and racial harmony. “This special holiday is significant as it provides the Hindu community in Kedah the opportunity to celebrate the festival with their families in a peaceful and comfortable setting,” he said in a statement.

Sivakumar, who is also the Treasurer of MIC, suggested that the state government consider declaring Thaipusam a public holiday in Kedah, given the significant Indian population, particularly among Hindus. “This step also reflects respect for the principles of the Rukun Negara, especially the first principle, ‘Belief in God,'” he added.

The approval of Thaipusam as a holiday in Kedah not only demonstrates care for the welfare of the Hindu community but also promotes greater inter-communal harmony in the state. Sivakumar hopes that this proposal will be discussed in the next council meeting, to recognize Thaipusam as a public holiday in the state.
