KUALA LUMPUR – Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, Member of Parliament for Muar, has become the first elected representative in Malaysia to receive a whipping sentence after being found guilty of four charges related to the misuse of funds from Angkatan Bersatu Anak Muda (Armada).

This was confirmed by Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin, who led the prosecution in the case involving Syed Saddiq. He was convicted of abetting criminal breach of trust (CBT), misuse of property, and money laundering under Malaysian law.

Sentencing Details

The High Court handed down the following sentences:

1. Abetting CBT – Three years in prison and one whipping.

2. Misuse of property – Two years in prison and one whipping.

3. Two money laundering charges – Two years in prison each and a RM5 million fine per charge.

In total, Syed Saddiq faces seven years in prison, two whippings, and RM10 million in fines. Failure to pay the fine could result in an additional four years of imprisonment.

Judicial Guidelines

Datuk Wan Shaharuddin highlighted that Section 289(c) of the Criminal Procedure Code 2007 exempts female offenders, those sentenced to death, and males over 50 years old from whipping.

Syed Saddiq’s Response

After the court proceedings, Syed Saddiq expressed his respect for the judiciary and acknowledged the need to trust the legal system. He stated:

Appeal: He has discussed filing an appeal with his legal team at the Court of Appeal to seek justice and clear his name.

Commitment to Justice: “The judiciary is the last line of defense for Malaysians. I stand firm on the principle that one must tell the truth even when it is bitter,” he said, quoting, “Qulil haq walau kana murran.”

Prosecution’s Perspective

The prosecution emphasized that this ruling is a significant milestone in ensuring accountability among public figures, especially in white-collar crimes.

Conclusion

The case sets a precedent in Malaysian politics, reinforcing that no one is above the law. Syed Saddiq’s upcoming appeal will be a pivotal moment in determining the final outcome of this groundbreaking case.
