PETALING JAYA: Tengku Zafrul Aziz has been unanimously elected as the new president of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) at its annual general meeting (AGM).

On March 25, it was reported that there had been a consensus among a majority of BAM’s council members for the investment, trade and industry minister to serve as the president for the 2025-2029 term.

At the time, BAM acting president V Subramaniam was reported to have said that they want a boss who is well-known as a corporate figure, and a minister, “with a lot of experience”.

Tengku Zafrul was then reported to have said that he accepted the chance to helm BAM and had been given the green light to do so from Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

After his election at the AGM today, Tengku Zafrul announced that Subramaniam has been reappointed as deputy president 1, while Dr Jahaberdeen Yunoos will remain as deputy president 2, Bernama reported.

Later, he told reporters that he needed 100 days to obtain views from stakeholders, players, coaching staff and sponsors before formulating a strategic and effective plan for the development of the national sport.

Tengku Zafrul said he needed time to understand and examine the proposals or issues plaguing the sport, adding that it was the best approach toward building a comprehensive and realistic plan to boost the country’s chances in international competitions.

“After the 100-day period, I will present my strategic vision and comprehensive action plan together with our team,” he was quoted as saying.

Tengku Zafrul came close to being appointed as BAM president in 2024 after Norza Zakaria had initially planned to step down from the post early last year.

However, youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh intervened and asked Norza to reconsider and remain in office until after the 2024 Paris Olympics in August.

BAM subsequently decided to appoint Subramaniam as acting president until today’s AGM.
