BANGKOK, July 23 (Bernama) — The Thai government has ordered all provincial authorities to maintain round-the-clock vigilance in high-risk areas and ensure swift evacuation of vulnerable groups amid the threat of Tropical Storm Wipha.
Acting Prime Minister and Interior Minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, said that the Ministry of Interior places great importance on disaster monitoring, early warning systems, and assistance for affected communities.
With Tropical Storm Wipha already affecting many parts of Thailand, Phumtham expressed concern for residents in high-risk zones and instructed all relevant agencies to coordinate closely and monitor the situation continuously.
“This time, all relevant agencies have demonstrated preparedness in disaster surveillance, prevention, and the rapid delivery of assistance to the public.
“It is particularly commendable that the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has enhanced its mobile phone alert system (Cell Broadcast) and pre-positioned large-scale disaster relief machinery in high-risk areas,” he said in a statement posted by the DDPM on its official X account on Wednesday.
Earlier, the minister chaired a meeting of the National Command for Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (NCDPM), with Deputy Interior Minister Teerarat Samrejvanich in attendance, along with the Interior Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Anusit Samphantharat, and the DDPM Director-General, Phasakorn Boonyalak.
Phumtham further instructed all provincial authorities to be on 24-hour alert for potential disasters.
“I sincerely thank all agencies for their alertness and cooperation. If a disaster does occur, this level of preparedness will help minimise damage and ensure the safety of our people,” he said.
Meanwhile, Phasakorn noted that the DDPM has been working closely with various sectors to prepare for flooding and landslides, and has been continuously monitoring the impact of Tropical Storm Wipha.
He added that the department has also established a Forward Command Centre in Chiang Mai to coordinate directly with affected provinces in the north.
“In terms of machinery, we have mobilised large-scale equipment from regional DDPM centres to support operations in the north, with machines already stationed in high-risk zones. We have also deployed a KA-32 helicopter and Guardian Team personnel to the Chiang Mai airbase in preparation for rescue missions, particularly in hard-to-reach areas,” he said.
