BANGKOK/ PHNOM PENH, July 25 (Bernama) — Thailand and Cambodia have both denied reports claiming Thai forces have taken control of the Preah Vihear Temple, as renewed border clashes continued into a second day.
Royal Thai Army Deputy Spokesperson Colonel Ritcha Suksuwanon on Friday dismissed the circulating reports, stating that Thai forces had not seized the temple or stationed troops there, labelling the reports as fake news.
“Military operations by the Royal Thai Army have been conducted solely to counter military targets, support combat operations, and respond to incursions into Thai territory by Cambodian forces,” he said in a statement on Friday.
He emphasised that the Royal Thai Army has no intention of occupying cultural or disputed sites, emphasising that its operations are focused on national defence and maintaining border security.
The statement comes amid rumours ciculating on social media – allegedly linked to Thai military sources – claiming that Thai forces had successfully seized the Preah Vihear Temple and Wat Kaeo Sikha Khiri Svara.
Thailand’s Second Army Region reported on Friday that clashes had occurred before dawn in Ubon Ratchathani and Surin provinces.
The Royal Thai Army also reported that more than 100,000 people have been evacuated from conflict zones on the Thai side of the border.
Meanwhile, in PHNOM PENH, Cambodia has denied that the Thai military has taken control of Preah Vihear Temple and Wat Kaeo Sikha Khiri Svara located in the Kingdom’s northern Preah Vihear province.
Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence spokesperson Lieutenant General Maly Socheata described the claims by a Thai newspaper as “false and unprofessional”.
“These sites remain fully under the control of Cambodian forces,” she told the media, reported Fresh News Friday.
Thai and Cambodian forces reportedly clashed early Thursday in a disputed border area, with each side accusing the other of initiating the latest round of violence.
As of Friday, Cambodian authorities had not released any details on potential casualties from the dawn skirmish.
Tensions between the two Southeast Asian neighbours have steadily escalated since a deadly clash on May 28, near the Preah Vihear area that left one Cambodian soldier dead.
On Wednesday, the Thai government downgraded diplomatic relations with Cambodia in retaliation after a Thai soldier was injured by what the government claimed was a newly planted landmine.
The Cambodian government reciprocated by lowering its diplomatic ties with Thailand to the lowest level on Thursday.
