KUALA LUMPUR: When Haermana Sivamohan thinks of pancakes, she doesn’t picture sky-high stacks dripping with syrup for Instagram. She remembers something much simpler: mornings before school when her mum would hand her slightly charred toast with salted butter and jam.
“It was always a little burnt because she’d forget it in the toaster,” she said with a laugh. “But that taste – simple, buttery, a little sweet – stayed with me.”
Later, she began making pancakes herself, inspired by American cartoons and food culture. “It’s such a cartoon dish,” she grinned. “My mom used to make pancakes too, so it just became something very integral to my upbringing.”
For Haermana, 29, pancakes have always carried the warmth of childhood. That warmth now lives at Construct KL, the intimate pancake dining she launched in May from her home in Bukit Tunku.
Over here, guests sit on her balcony facing the forest, slowing down over two gourmet-style pancakes served hot from the pan.
Some linger in silence, others engage in animated discussions over the conversation starter cards she prepares. “I didn’t want it to feel like a café,” she said. “It’s more like going over to a friend’s house.”
What surprised her most was how quickly strangers connected. Her first guests from women’s night are now firm friends – meeting up for banana leaf meals and tea.

That’s when she realised Construct KL wasn’t just about pancakes, but about creating a space for people to open up. “Sometimes you keep your guard up with friends, but with strangers, it comes down,” she explained.
Today, Construct KL hosts themed nights – Women’s Night on Wednesdays, a Shared Table on Saturdays, and soon, Men’s Nights.
The daily sessions, usually from morning till 5-6pm, last 75 minutes per slot but the Shared Table dinners, held on Saturdays, often stretch for hours.
“One started at 8.30pm and ended at 3.30 in the morning,” she laughed. “None of us even knew each other at the start!”
That kind of openness – where strangers walk in and leave as friends – comes straight from Haermana herself. After all, what kind of person invites strangers into their home to eat pancakes?
For Haermana, the answer is simple: someone unafraid. “I’ve had people tell me, ‘Oh my god, put cameras up, get a Rottweiler, aren’t you afraid of getting murdered?’ But I’ve never been an overly fearful person. I wasn’t raised that way.”
Haermana took nearly eight weeks to perfect her pancake recipe. (Muhammad Rabbani Jamian @ FMT Lifestyle)
While she takes sensible steps – payments are made upfront, and in the early days she would lightly vet bookings – her trust has mostly been rewarded. “I’ve met some of the warmest, kindest people through this.”
And the pancakes themselves? They’re as comforting as her story suggests. Fluffy and buttery, with a delicate char that adds crispness and depth.
Her homemade sauce – sweet, buttery, with a hint of salt – elevates each bite, while the fruit compote brings colour and a tart balance.
It’s no surprise then that word has spread quickly. For now, pancakes remain her passion, but she’s eager to push the boundaries. “I’ll be introducing savoury pancakes – think English breakfast, but with pancakes instead of sourdough.”
Construct KL is not just about pancakes – it’s a space for friends and strangers to connect. (Muhammad Rabbani Jamian @ FMT Lifestyle)
She’s also planning an international pancake event every month. The idea is delightfully whimsical: one day dedicated to a different country’s take on pancakes – French crêpes, Dutch babies, Indian variations, and more.
She’s even created a “pancake passport”, complete with stamps and recipe cards, for guests to collect as they taste their way around the world.
To those who might be wary of tucking into pancakes from a stranger’s balcony, Hearmana gets it. “If you’re nervous, just text me first. You’ll realise I’m not that much of a weirdo,” she laughs.
“Some people have really bad social anxiety, and even getting out of the house feels impossible. But once they come, they always say, ‘Oh my god, I’m so glad I came.’ They end up meeting so many different people.”
For her, that’s the heart of Construct KL – pancakes are just the entry point. The real magic happens when walls come down, conversations flow, and strangers leave as friends. Or as Haermana likes to say: “You never try, never know, right?”
