MIC Deputy President Slams Independent Preacher’s Mockery of Hindu Kavadi Ritual

PETALING JAYA: MIC deputy president M Saravanan has taken a strong stance against independent preacher Zamri Vinoth’s "disgraceful" mockery of the Hindu kavadi ritual, calling his comments "extremely disrespectful and deeply offensive to the Hindu community".

In a statement, Saravanan said that Zamri’s remarks are "clearly against the Madani government’s stance on 3R (race, religion and royalty) matters". He also added that "there are many police complaints against him, and the police and government must take action against him once and for all".

Saravanan, who is also the Tapah MP, expressed his disappointment over Zamri’s comments, which were made on a Facebook post. Zamri said that Hindu worshippers performing the kavadi ritual looked like they were "possessed and drunk on toddy". He also advised people not to be angry with others for doing things that they themselves do.

Saravanan condemned Zamri’s comments, stating that they are an insult to the Hindu faith and Malaysian cultural traditions. He urged Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to issue an order for Zamri to be charged immediately, as this is not the first time the controversial preacher has insulted Hinduism.

The controversy surrounding Zamri’s comments stems from his reaction to a recent video clip shared on Era FM’s social media platforms, in which three radio hosts were seen mocking the Thaipusam kavadi ritual by chanting the phrase "Vel Vel" while laughing. The video sparked outrage, and Astro Audio subsequently took the three off the air and suspended them.

Conclusion

Saravanan’s strong reaction to Zamri’s comments highlights the sensitivity surrounding religious issues in Malaysia. As a multicultural society, it is essential to respect and understand the beliefs and practices of all religions. Zamri’s mockery of the Hindu kavadi ritual has sparked outrage, and it is crucial that those in positions of authority take action to address the situation.
