Tightened Security Measures at Shopping Malls Across the Country
Following a shooting incident at a shopping mall in Setia Alam, Shah Alam, last night, Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain has announced that security measures at shopping malls across the country will be tightened.
Suspect Identified and Police Units Tracking His Whereabouts
Razarudin Husain said that Selangor police have identified the suspect, a Malaysian man in his 30s with a criminal record, and various police units are tracking his whereabouts. Police in neighbouring states and border authorities have also been told to remain alert.
Victim in Stable Condition
The victim, a cleaner at the shopping mall, was storing cleaning equipment when the suspect fired four shots, hitting the victim in the leg and buttocks. The suspect then fled the scene, went to the parking zone, and forced a mall visitor at gunpoint to drive him out of the area. The suspect ordered the driver to drop him off by the roadside near the Shah Alam Expressway (Kesas), after which the driver lodged a police report. The victim, who was rushed to Shah Alam Hospital for treatment, is in stable condition.
Investigation Underway
The case is being investigated under Section 3 of the Firearms (Heavier Penalties) Act 1971 for discharging a firearm during the commission of an offence, which carries the death penalty if convicted. The case is also being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, which carries a 20-year jail term upon conviction.
Public Urged to Refrain from Speculation
Razarudin Husain urged the public to refrain from making any speculation that could cause unnecessary alarm. "We understand the public are concerned about this incident, but we hope they will remain calm and allow us to conduct our investigation," he said.
