KUALA LUMPUR – Universiti Malaya (UM) has suspended a lecturer following allegations of sexual harassment involving explicit messages.
In a statement released on Monday (Dec 23), UM confirmed that the suspension was in line with the Statutory Bodies (Discipline and Surcharge) Act 2000.
“UM will continue to ensure that its campus remains a safe and conducive environment. Strict action will be taken against any individual found guilty of misconduct, regardless of their position or status,” the statement read.
The move comes after Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir directed the university on Saturday (Dec 21) to launch an immediate investigation into two separate allegations that have damaged the institution’s reputation.
Dr Zambry stressed that the order was necessary to ensure the university treated the matter with the seriousness it deserved, adding that justice must prevail.
“The ministry will not tolerate any form of misconduct that violates the law,” he said.
UM’s handling of the case is expected to set a precedent as Malaysia’s universities face increasing pressure to address sexual harassment on campus.
