Write an article about Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs said the team should focus on recruiting more centre forwards to score more goals.
KUALA LUMPUR: Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs doesn’t believe the season is dead for the Red Devils despite the club’s woeful run in the Premier League, citing the team’s “outstanding” form in the Europa league.
Giggs, who has won 34 trophies with United, said the team have yet to have been beaten, adding it was a “massive contrast” to its domestic run.
“There have been lots of negatives obviously,” Giggs said, alluding to United’s form in England. United registered their 18th defeat of the season after losing 0-1 to Chelsea.
“But (there has) also (been) positives and the season isn’t dead,” he said at a press conference here.
Giggs is in the capital to promote a match between United and the Asean All Stars for the Maybank Challenge Cup 2025, which will be held on May 28 at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium.
Giggs said if United had crashed out of Europa league, it would have been a really poor end to the season.
“But we still have this (the final against Tottenham Hotspur) to look forward to and hopefully the lads can do it.”
United will meet Spurs, who are also having a torrid season, in Bilbao on May 22.
Giggs said the opportunity to play in the Champions League is probably why both teams are focusing on Europa league.
Both United and Spurs are currently languishing in the 16th and 17th spot respectively.
Giggs said there were many “plusses” about being able to play in the Champions League, including attracting players.
And when it comes to signing new players, Giggs is of the view that United should focus on recruiting centre forwards.
He noted that the team had only brought in one recognised centre forward over the last 10 years, which meant the team was relying solely on the player to lead the frontline.
Giggs said in the past, with three or four centre forwards, these strikers could come in at any time.
“So (getting) a centre forward, definitely. We need to score more goals. Right now, we rely too much on Bruno to score the goals,” he said, referring to United’s captain Bruno Fernandes.
Giggs said that United head coach Ruben Amorim probably realises that the team cannot compete in both Europe and the league at the moment “with the players that he’s got”.
“So, he has a recruitment job in the summer and hopefully the club will support him in the transfer market and get the players that he wants.”
