HAMILTON (Canada), June 5 (Bernama-Anadolu) — The United States (US) on Wednesday vetoed a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) draft resolution that called for an “immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire” in the Gaza Strip, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported.
The draft, proposed by Slovenia on behalf of the Council’s 10 elected members — Algeria, Denmark, Greece, Guyana, Panama, Pakistan, the Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone, Somalia, and Slovenia — received 14 votes in favour.
The resolution expressed “grave concern over the catastrophic humanitarian situation, including the risk of famine,” and recalled the obligations of all parties to uphold international humanitarian and human rights law.
Ahead of the vote, US Charge d’Affaires ad interim Dorothy Shea said, “US opposition to this resolution should come as no surprise.”
“It is unacceptable for what it does say, it is unacceptable for what it does not say, and it is unacceptable for how it has been advanced,” she said.
“Any product that undermines our close ally Israel’s security is a non-starter,” she added, reiterating that “Israel has a right to defend itself.”
The latest veto marked the fifth time Washington has blocked ceasefire resolutions since the conflict escalated in Gaza.
The US previously vetoed draft texts in October and December 2023, February and November 2024, and abstained on several other occasions.
