Increasing Access to Employment for Persons with Disabilities in Malaysia
The Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA) has been working towards increasing access to employment for Persons with Disabilities (PwD) through various initiatives and strategies.
Return to Work (RTW) Programme
Deputy Minister of Human Resources Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad highlighted the success of the RTW programme, which has helped 70,566 job seekers among PwD, including participants in the RTW programme, find employment. The RTW programme is a disability management programme aimed at helping contributors who are injured or have an illness to recover and return to work sooner, healthier and safer.
MADANI Training Programme
In addition, KESUMA has implemented the MADANI Training Programme, which has empowered 1,915 PwDs with basic training skills through various courses. The programme provides opportunities for PwDs to develop their skills and increase their employability.
Accreditation of Training Centres
KESUMA has accredited 1,582 centres throughout Malaysia, with 922 of these centres accepting PwD trainees to undergo skills training. This has provided more opportunities for PwDs to gain skills and find employment.
Manpower Department Training Institution (ILJTM)
The Manpower Department (JTM) has also trained PwD students at ILJTM, providing them with training in fields such as graphic design technology, electronic technology, and mechatronic technology. Additionally, JTM has offered an allowance of RM300 per month and tuition fee exemption to PwD students.
Progress and Achievements
As of December last year, a total of 245 disabled students from various categories have been trained at ILJTM. This is a significant step towards increasing access to employment for PwDs.
Conclusion
The efforts of KESUMA have been successful in increasing access to employment for PwDs in Malaysia. The initiatives and strategies implemented have provided opportunities for PwDs to develop their skills and find employment. With the continued support of the government, it is hoped that more PwDs will have the opportunity to access employment and lead independent lives.
