KUALA LUMPUR, July 25 (Bernama) – Wanita DAP has, for the first time, launched the Women in Politics: Outstanding Media Awards to encourage in-depth media coverage on women’s participation in politics.

In a statement today, the DAP women’s wing said the awards aim to recognise outstanding media practitioners who document the stories of women in politics with empathy and precision, so that their voices and contributions may be heard, remembered and preserved for posterity.

There are four language categories — Bahasa Malaysia, English, Mandarin and Tamil — and is open to news articles and video productions published or broadcast between January 1 and December 31, 2025.

“Entries from print media, online platforms, electronic media and new media are welcome, including television news, YouTube channels, podcasts and social media platforms,” the statement said.

Winners of the Grand Prize in each language category will receive RM3,000, while three Excellence Award recipients in each language will receive RM1,000.

According to the statement, eligible entries must focus on women’s involvement in politics — encompassing personal journeys, experiences overcoming gender barriers, contributions to public policy and social issues, or influence across sectors.

“This includes women who are village committee members, political party representatives, local councillors, Members of Parliament or assemblymen, regardless of political affiliation.

“Media practitioners and digital content creators are encouraged to highlight these women’s stories in their work and submit them for consideration,” it said.

Meanwhile, Wanita DAP chief Teo Nie Ching said in the same statement that the awards are intended to harness the power of media in breaking stereotypes and portraying women political leaders through diverse perspectives — ultimately making their narratives catalysts for social reform and gender equality.

Teo, who is also Deputy Communications Minister, also expressed hope that the award would encourage more journalists to spotlight inspiring stories of women in politics, foster positive narratives in society, and inject new energy into discourse surrounding gender equality.

All entries must be submitted by January 15, 2026, via email to media-awards-wanita@dapmalaysia.org or by contacting 016-640 2291 for further information.
